Duke went missing from his home on November 5th 2001, two miles away from where we live, after fireworks had frightened him. |
He crossed the county border to reach our garden where we found him cowering. |
For the next 13 hours, we bathed him , gave him two meals, biscuits, chewy bones, and toys, two walks to find his home, a nice warm bed and a room to rest all night. And although Duke was the kind of dog everyone wants to end up with, I was pleased when we and his owner had tracked each other down. |

First of all, prevention is better than cure. |
Lets see what we can do to make it easier for our pet to find us. |
a) Make sure your pet is wearing a collar at all times. (safety collars for cats). |
b) Get a disc and have it engraved with your day-time, night-time and mobile telephone number so you can be reached at all times. |
c) Get your pet microchipped, it is painless, and lasts a lifetime. |
Get another disc engraved with "I am microchipped - Please scan me". If found, wearing this, any vet would willingly scan it, and it is normal praxes to do thi s in Rescue Centres. |
d) Take photographs of your dog, standing next to a chair to give others an idea of its height. Also take photographs of its frontside and underneath. |
e) Try testing youself by writing a detailed description with your pet out of the room. Easy?? |
On the following three pages there is an example of a "lost and found poster", next an empty one to use yourself, a page of telephone "Hotlines" for you to complete, and a page of suggestions of where to display your posters. Please print it off and complete it as soon as possible, keep it handy, i.e. your pets food cupboard, in the unlikely event that you ever lose your pet. As time will be of the essence. |
